How to view the artwork on this website
There are two ways to experience this artwork, literally and metaphorically.
Viewed
literally the artwork may appear whimsical, fun, or perhaps a little quirky.
Viewed metaphorically the images and objects in my paintings are carefully
created
archetypes, or universal symbols. The sun for example, suggests the fully
realized
and awakened state, the realization of Being. A ray of light, or sunbeam,
suggests
the extension of Being into the dualistic dimension. The child suggests
innocence,
the pear suggests the world of form, and so forth. Through these metaphors
the
artwork expresses a view of the world from an awakening perspective and
points
toward the possibility of the viewer sharing in that perspective. Mythologist
Joseph
Campbell correctly stated: “the most powerful metaphors pitch our
awareness past
the limits of the iconography and into a realization beyond mental formations”.
This is a description of the most powerful kind of art.
Take the painting “Sun In A Wheelchair” for example. Viewed
literally it is a sun in wheelchair.
Viewed as an elementary symbol it may convey the possibility of shining
through limitations.
However, viewed as a potent metaphor, an archetypal image—a universal
symbol in other
words, it is a portrait of humanity.
Historical Connections
The many artists in modern history (particularly Morris Graves and Mark
Tobey) who sought to
express a universal and ‘sacred’ order through their art have
been a compelling influence in my
artwork. (Click above to read their quotes).
Other Influences In My Artwork
Additionally, mythologist, Joseph Campbell, and the great wisdom teachers
throughout the ages,
have profoundly influenced my artwork.
